All across the country, Americans are suffering from heartbreaking conditions that still don’t have an effective treatment or cure. If we are serious about breaking new ground in our understanding of complex diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer, it is imperative that we boost investments in medical research. That’s why last week, I led a bipartisan letter with 144 of my colleagues urging the Appropriations Committee to increase funding for the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2016.

Funding for NIH supports vital research to develop breakthrough treatments and improve health outcomes, and it supports more than 300,000 jobs at 2,500 research institutions around the nation. Unfortunately, during the past decade, investments in NIH have not kept pace with inflation, meaning we are losing the great return and impact we have seen historically. It’s time for Congress to prioritize NIH funding so we can develop the next generation of treatments and cures to the diseases affecting millions of Americans in the 21st century.
