I’m Fighting to Protect WA Families from GOP Surprise Unemployment Bills

Dear Friend,

When millions of workers found themselves jobless overnight at the start of the pandemic, Congress increased unemployment insurance benefits so Americans could put food on the table, keep a roof over their head, and heat their homes.

Many workers filled out their claims in good faith based on information from their employers and state agencies. Some of these workers received overpayments, through no fault of their own, because of miscalculations made by the states. Now, Republicans in Congress are trying to put families on the hook for that overpayment or face steep punishments.

Washingtonians who filled out applications honestly shouldn’t be saddled with these new bills. That’s why this week I pushed to protect working families from these surprise unemployment bills. Sadly, my Republican colleagues unanimously rejected my proposal while moving forward with their legislation. But this isn’t over. I’ll continue to work to protect our families and workers.
