Dear Friend,
Nearly a decade ago, a landslide near Oso claimed 43 lives, destroyed 40 homes, and caused extensive damage to public and private property. In the wake of this tragedy, I worked to successfully pass the National Landslide Preparedness Act which invests in programs and research to ensure communities are better prepared for and can respond to landslides.
This law has since played a critical role in saving lives, protecting communities and properties, and improving natural disaster emergency preparedness. It is important that we continue building on this progress. I recently introduced legislation to renew these programs through 2028 to prevent future natural disasters from becoming national tragedies. Without congressional action, these programs will expire this year.
I spoke before the House Committee on Natural Resources this week on the importance of extending these critical landslide prevention and preparedness programs. You can watch my remarks here.
