Dear Friend,
This week marked six years since the mass shooting at Parkland High School in Florida, which killed 17 people and forever changed the lives of countless others. The 14th of February was once again marked by the all too familiar tragedy of a mass shooting. In Kansas City, during a celebration of the Chief’s Super Bowl win, a shooting killed a mother of two and injured many more including at least 11 children. My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. But thoughts and prayers have never been enough.
Americans deserve to feel safe in their communities. We deserve to not have moments of joy and celebration destroyed by violence. Last Congress, we made progress with enacting the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a historic law that is helping reduce gun violence and keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous people. While this is progress, we know we must do more. Congress must pass commonsense gun safety reform, including background checks and an assault weapons ban, to address senseless gun violence.
