Turning This Moment Into Meaningful Change

Dear friend,

Over the past few weeks, the murder of George Floyd by an on-duty police officer has sparked nationwide protests about discrimination and the unfair treatment of Black Americans in our criminal justice system. Americans from all walks of life are exercising their constitutional right to protest peacefully against generations of racism and injustice and calling for change. I recently attended a rally in Redmond to stand in solidarity with those protesting these injustices.

I also joined a community clean up in Bellevue where a mom from Redmond brought her two small children to remove graffiti. It was a reminder that we are not born with hate. Hate is taught as is kindness, compassion, and fairness.

It is incumbent on all of us to use this moment to not only bring attention to injustice but also galvanize that energy into real change. This week, the House of Representatives led by the Congressional Black Caucus unveiled the Justice in Policing Act (H.R. 7120), our bold policing reform bill. I am proud to be an original cosponsor of this necessary legislation that will hold police accountable and change the culture of law enforcement. You can learn more about the bill here.

We all have a part to play in this moment. I hope you will do yours by calling for more just policies at all levels of government and creating the culture you want to see in your community and across our country. As the great civil rights leader and my friend and colleague Congressman John Lewis said, “if you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something about it.”

I see discrimination that is not right. I see a system that is not fair. I see a culture that is not just. I will do something about it.

Take care,

Suzan
