This week, President Biden signed a strongly bipartisan law that I supported to improve the safety and ease of air travel. It includes many new consumer protections that will help ensure you’re treated more fairly when booking flights, at the airport, and in the skies.

Automatic Refunds – The law ensures travelers will get automatic cash refunds when a flight is significantly delayed (3 or more hours for domestic flights, 6 or more for international) or canceled. Travelers do not need to request a refund. Should they choose to take an airline credit, it must be valid for 5 years.

Families Sit Together for Free – Airlines cannot charge families with young children more money to be seated together.

Improved Accessibility – Airline staff will be required to receive enhanced training on how to better support travelers with disabilities, including those using wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Air Traffic Controllers – The law will help hire more air traffic controllers to address the ongoing workforce shortage and improve safety.

Incentives for Cleaner Fuel – I secured several provisions to promote greener aviation fuels that will help lower emissions & propel us toward a more sustainable future. This is something we’re uniquely equipped for in the Pacific Northwest. I recently joined one of our hydrogen-powered plane manufacturers at the opening of their new Snohomish County facility.
