Today marks the beginning of Startup Week Across America. This week, a bipartisan coalition of House members will draw attention to the important role startups play in our economy and how we can help support their efforts to grow and succeed.

In 2015, startup firms created 2.5 million jobs, roughly 15 percent of all new job creation that year. In 2017, startups represented almost 9.5 percent of all private sector firms in the United States. Firms less than a year old and with 10 or fewer employees created 1.9 million jobs and more than half of these jobs were created by firms with four employees or less. 

“Startups play an important role in the strength of our economy and the everyday lives of people all across our country. They are responsible for the creation of millions of new jobs, and it is Congress’ job to help create an environment that affords everyone the opportunity to develop an idea and see it through to success. Giving these entrepreneurs the tools to succeed will result in groundbreaking achievements and ensure the U.S. remains committed to fostering a healthy startup ecosystem,” said Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA).

“Small businesses are the engine of job growth in this country, and entrepreneurship provides the spark and fuel for them,” said Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14). “The fabric of our nation is literally woven with the ambition and hope of entrepreneurship and the recognition that anyone, from any background, can innovate, persevere and build a business. “Startup Week Across America is a great opportunity for Members of Congress to recognize the innovative and economic contributions of startups in our communities,” said Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09). “This week, I’ll be visiting HATCH Workshop, a startup in Stockton, California that provides training and education in fine crafts, design, and entrepreneurship, in addition to offering affordable housing, workspaces and workshop access. This startup is expanding its impact by offering other startups and entrepreneurs the tools and resources needed to get their businesses off the ground. It’s a great example for why we must continue to foster startup opportunities and support policies that help turn innovative, unique ideas into America’s next great business venture.”
