Dear friend,
This week, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that Idaho hospitals must once again provide emergency abortions for patients whose health is in danger despite the state’s near-total ban. While this ruling offers temporary relief, it highlights the fragility and uncertainty of reproductive freedoms nationwide. In a separate case this week, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld a 6-week abortion ban, a period before most women even realize they are pregnant.
Extreme abortion bans, such as Idaho and Iowa’s are dangerous. These draconian laws force women to undertake difficult and expensive journeys to receive care outside their home states, compel them to carry pregnancies against their will or to the detriment of their health, and can even lead to the prosecution of patients and doctors alike. These bans also disproportionately impact communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ Americans, and young people who face barriers in accessing care.
I am working with my Democratic colleagues to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which will restore comprehensive reproductive rights that the Supreme Court ripped away two years ago. We must ensure, once and for all, that every American can access the health care they need. I won’t stop fighting until we get this bill across the finish line.
