FBI Surveillance

Dear Friend,

This week, the Associated Press reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has repeatedly used aircraft for surveillance missions over a number of U.S. cities, including Seattle.

As your representative in Congress, protecting civil liberties is one of my highest priorities. That’s why I led 15 of my colleagues in sending a letter to FBI Director James Comey, requesting a briefing on the Bureau’s aircraft surveillance program and the legal authority behind it.

The reports on the FBI’s activities are highly disturbing, especially in the wake of the USA Freedom Act of 2015 being signed into law – an important step forward for protecting Americans from unwarranted surveillance. Some of the FBI’s aircraft may have been equipped with advanced surveillance devices that can sweep up data from the cell phones of thousands of law abiding Americans on the ground. The possibility that these activities are happening without proper judicial and congressional oversight is deeply concerning. Warrantless intrusions of ordinary Americans’ privacy cannot – and must not – continue.

The letter asks the FBI to answer several questions, including what legal justification is used to create and operate the program and how warrants are sought and obtained. You may read the full letter HERE.
