Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement today after supporting a tax relief package, which passed in the House of Representatives on a 318-109 vote.

“I’m pleased that today’s bill includes many provisions I have fought for in Congress. Good tax policy goes a long way toward expanding access to opportunity for the middle class and encouraging sustained economic growth,” DelBene said. “This package will permanently extend the state and local sales tax deduction and the Earned Income Tax Credit, providing relief for countless residents in states like Washington. It also boosts investments to foster innovation in the green economy and supports many of our local businesses by making the R&D tax credit permanent and delaying the medical device tax.

“While this deal could have done more to provide long-term economic stability for millions of hardworking families by indexing the Child Tax Credit to inflation, the compromise reached will help provide certainty by making this critical tax credit permanent. The bill also provides families assistance with the rising cost of college by making the expansion of the American Opportunity Tax Credit permanent.

“But our tax code remains overly complex and confusing, with too many outdated provisions that no longer serve their purpose. It is long past time to bring the tax code into the 21st century, and I remain committed to working with my colleagues on a fiscally responsible, comprehensive plan that supports the middle class and economic growth while reducing the deficit in a balanced way.”

DelBene helped introduce the Protect Medical Innovation Act to repeal the medical device tax, which has stifled a key job-creating industry for Washington’s First District. She also cosponsored legislation to make the sales tax deduction permanent, providing tax-relief for residents in states like Washington that charge higher sales tax in place of income tax.
