DelBene Celebrates Preservation of Illabot Creek, Rafts Skagit River

The Congresswoman helped pass legislation to designate Illabot Creek as wild and scenic.

CONCRETE – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) celebrated the designation of Illabot Creek as wild and scenic today by rafting part of the Skagit River.

“People have come to Illabot Creek for generations to hunt, fish and recreate. Designating Illabot Creek as wild and scenic has preserved these opportunities for generations to come.” DelBene said. “Protecting water quality, wildlife, fisheries and expanding outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities are critical for preserving what makes living in the Pacific Northwest so special. And, this beautiful river is a great example of that.”

DelBene helped pass the Illabot Creek Wild and Scenic Act, designating more than 14 miles of Illabot Creek — part of Skagit River — as wild and scenic. Designating waters as wild and scenic means there can be no new mining claims, hydropower projects or building of any kind on the area.

Members of American Rivers, American Whitewater and The Nature Conservancy joined DelBene on the rafting trip.

“Illabot Creek’s new designation as a Wild and Scenic River will permanently protect habitat for two of the Northwest’s most iconic species – salmon and eagles,” said Wendy McDermott, Associate Director for Washington Conservation Programs at American Rivers. “We’re thrilled that it is now part of the Skagit River Wild and Scenic River System and truly thankful for the leadership of Congresswoman DelBene for making that a reality.”
