MONROE – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today visited a local elementary school classroom, as part of the Choose My Plate program to teach students about the variety of healthy foods grown nearby.

DelBene spoke with two fourth grade classrooms about the importance of eating local, healthy foods.

“We are fortunate in the First District to have farmers who grow some of the best food in the world. If kids know where their food comes from, they are more likely to be passionate and connected to their food choices,” DelBene said. “By introducing kids to varieties of fruits and vegetables at a young age, we can teach them how to be healthy in the long-term.”

MyPlate is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program that promotes healthy eating among children by focusing on the five food groups including fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy.

“Students at Maltby are provided healthy choices in support of the Choose My Plate program,” said Principal Bonnie McKerney. “Students love the wide variety of healthy foods provided each day in our lunchroom, many choices from our local farmers.”

DelBene serves as a member of the House Agriculture Committee and helped negotiate the 2014 farm bill, which included programs promoting local food systems, and encouraging schools to use fresh, local produce in school lunches.
