DelBene Fights to Strengthen Older Americans Act

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) issued the following statement today on the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA):

“Fifty years ago, Congress enacted the Older Americans Act — a landmark achievement that has provided our nation’s seniors with vital assistance for the costs of food, nursing care and other support services. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of these critical programs, we must look forward to the next 50 years and put policies in place to ensure our seniors continue to be well-cared for,” DelBene said. “With 10,000 Americans turning 65 every day, the time is now to reauthorize and strengthen the Older Americans Act to help seniors remain independent and ensure their needs are being met.”

More than 9 million seniors face the threat of hunger and rely on OAA nutrition services, such as Meals on Wheels. From 2005-2013, more than 1.2 billion meals were home delivered, nearly 14 million in Washington state.
