Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today helped introduce the FAIR Social Security Act, which would scrap the cap and keep Social Security solvent for more than 40 years. “It’s critical that lawmakers are forward-looking in crafting policies that ensure our seniors continue to be well-cared for.” DelBene said. “Instead of breaking our promise to seniors, we should lift the income contribution cap on the wealthiest Americans, which would keep Social Security solvent through 2057 – just by making everyone pay their fair share.” Eighty years ago, the Social Security program was created to keep our nation’s seniors out of poverty. Currently, income above $118,500 is not subject to the Social Security tax. The FAIR Social Security Act would eliminate that cap and ensure the wealthy pay their fair share into the Social Security Trust Fund. DelBene joined Democratic Reps. Peter DeFazio (OR-04), Louise Slaughter (NY-25), Raul Grijalva (AZ-03) and Chellie Pingree (ME-01) as original cosponsors of the legislation. # # # |
