DelBene: Trump’s Budget Guts Basic Necessities for Middle-Class Families

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today in a House Budget Committee hearing highlighted the damaging effects of President Trump’s budget.

“Trump’s budget jeopardizes the middle class by gutting funding for basic necessities like healthcare, nutrition, housing and education,” DelBene said. “This budget would have a negative impact on critical research, healthcare, job training and education, just to name a few. We should instead be working on a bipartisan budget that provides working families certainty and stability through strategic investments. This budget is as irresponsible as it is dangerous.”

DelBene serves on the House Budget Committee, which has jurisdiction over these issues. She questioned Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney about the harm Trump’s budget would have on rural communities and medical research. Video can be found HERE.

The President’s budget would cut funding for programs like Medicaid, Meals on Wheels, Head Start, Special Olympics, Pell Grants, Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP). It would also cut nearly $6 billion in investments to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
