DelBene Marks Farm to School Month

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today spoke on the House floor in recognition of October as National Farm to School Month:

“I rise to celebrate Farm to School Month. Having healthy food in our schools is crucial. We know that when students are provided with wholesome foods, they are more likely to pay attention in class and learn.

“In addition, by introducing kids to varieties of fruits and vegetables at a young age, we can teach them how to eat healthy over the long-term. We are fortunate in our district to have farmers who grow some of the best food in the world. If kids know where their food comes from, they are more likely to be passionate and connected to their food choices.

“Across my district, hundreds of different fruits and vegetables are grown. These crops provide fresh, quality foods to our schools. Why buy berries from another state when you can purchase it from local farmers? I strongly support the efforts of our local farm to school movement and recognize those working to increase access to nutritious foods in schools.”

DelBene serves on the House Agriculture Committee and is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Biotechnology, Horticulture and Research.
