DelBene statement on House Passage of Ryan Republican Budget
Washington, DC,
April 10, 2014
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene issued the following statement regarding today’s vote on the House Republican budget: “To get our economy back on track and help Washington’s families and businesses, we need to find responsible, bipartisan solutions to our nation’s fiscal issues. Unfortunately, the Ryan Republican budget passed by the House today was neither responsible nor bipartisan. “It’s very disappointing that the budget passed today is projected to cost 3 million jobs and will protect tax breaks that encourage companies to ship American jobs overseas. “To create jobs and grow our economy, we must make smart investments in education, research, clean energy, and transportation infrastructure. Sadly, the Ryan budget is a step backwards with dramatic and painful cuts in all of these critical areas. “Instead of providing relief to middle class families, the Ryan budget raises their taxes while giving a tax break to high-income earners. “Finally, what this budget does to our seniors and low-income families is unconscionable. It ends the Medicare guarantee and will lead to higher premiums and prescription drug costs for millions of seniors and future retirees. The $137 billion in cuts to nutrition assistance are far too deep, hurting those who are struggling the most. “We can do better. Instead of a reckless, partisan budget, we should be working on bipartisan solutions to build an economy that works for everyone. This means crafting a budget that creates jobs, spurs innovation, expands economic opportunity, and responsibly reduces our deficit. Despite today’s divisive and partisan vote, I remain committed to sitting down and working with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to work on solutions that will strengthen the middle class and build the foundation for long-term economic growth.” |
