DelBene Statement on Release of Improved USA Freedom Act
Washington, DC,
July 29, 2014
House Judiciary Committee Member Suzan DelBene issued the following statement today after Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy introduced a new version of the USA Freedom Act: “I am pleased that the version of the USA Freedom Act introduced today includes important improvements to the House-passed USA Freedom Act, and I commend Senator Leahy’s efforts to continue the fight for stronger legislation to restore Americans’ privacy rights and end the bulk collection of Americans’ phone records. "Today, more than a year after Americans first learned about the scope of the National Security Agency’s domestic spying program that was sweeping up the private communications records of millions of innocent Americans, it is critical for Congress to take action to enact meaningful reform to rein in the NSA and overhaul our government surveillance programs. "During consideration of the USA Freedom Act in the House Judiciary Committee, I fought for increased transparency to ensure that companies are allowed to disclose information to the public about the number and nature of government demands for user information. Importantly, the bill introduced today enhances the company reporting provision and expands the government reporting provisions to increase transparency and provide greater accountability to the American people. "I will continue to work with my colleagues to get bipartisan legislation to the President’s desk that finally ends the NSA’s bulk collection of American’s personal data." |
