As part of National Foster Care Month, I had the opportunity to participate in Foster Youth Shadow Day and hear firsthand from a First District constituent about her experiences in the foster care system.
Today, a 19-year-old named Azia from Kirkland joined me on Capitol Hill. Azia told me her transition through the system was tough but with support from her caretaker and social worker she has made significant strides, including working on a degree at North Seattle College with the goal of pursuing a career in journalism. It was an honor to spend time with such an active and engaged community leader.
Currently in the United States, more than 400,000 young people are looking for permanency with caring parents, which is one of the reasons I joined the congressional Foster Care Caucus. It’s vitally important that we work to ensure all young people have the opportunity to achieve their dreams. I certainly didn’t get where I am today without the help of others and it’s inspiring to see someone like Azia achieving her goals.
