Dear Friend,
Hard cider is a growing industry, and entrepreneurs in Washington state have helped blaze the trail. Recently, I was in Woodinville visiting Locust Cider, one of the many great cideries, breweries and wineries located in the First District.
The alcohol content of hard cider can fluctuate depending on how much sugar is naturally in the apples, making it difficult for a local business like Locust Cider to predict their tax liability and expand production.
Thankfully, the CIDER Act, a bill I cosponsored, passed as part of the year-end tax relief package. The bill updated the definition of hard pear and apple ciders in the tax code, allowing more of these small businesses to invest in expanding and hiring more employees.
This important tax relief will help provide certainty for our cideries and will encourage economic growth not only in this industry, but with local farmers and manufacturers as well.
