A quick update

Dear Friend,

Six years since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Citizens United v. F.E.C., it is clearer than ever that our electoral process needs campaign finance reform. In that controversial 5-4 decision, the conservative majority on the Court declared that campaign donations equal free speech, and that corporations have the same rights as individual Americans. Since then, massive sums of money from hidden donors have flooded our elections, and we will no doubt see much more in this year’s campaign season. It’s time for Congress to stop the flow of dark money and act to restore confidence in our democracy by reducing the influence of money in politics.

That’s why I have cosponsored commonsense reforms like the Government By the People Act (H.R. 20) and the DISCLOSE Act (H.R. 430), which would increase transparency and restore power to voters. And why I support a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and ban corporations from using their general funds in elections. I believe voters have the right to know where election money is going and who it’s from, and I believe all Americans have the right to participate in our democracy without having their voices drowned out by super PACs and shadowy organizations. Moving forward, I will keep fighting against any system that is rigged to allow special interests to have more of a say in elections than voters.
