Preserving our home

Dear Friend,

This past weekend, I celebrated National Trails Day by restoring trails in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness with members of the Washington Trails Association, The Wilderness Society, American Whitewater, and Mountains to Sound Greenway. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness consists of more than 400,000 acres and 700 lakes in the North Cascades, and it’s just one of the First Congressional District’s many natural treasures.

I am pleased to have been an original cosponsor, along with Congressman Dave Reichert and Senator Patty Murray, of the law that expands the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and permanently protects the Pratt and Middle Fork Snoqualmie Rivers. Protecting our natural resources is not only good for our environment, but good for our economy as well. By encouraging outdoor recreation in areas such as the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, we’re supporting an industry that supports more than 227,000 jobs and generates $22.5 billion in consumer spending in our state.

The Alpine Lakes expansion provides a unique opportunity to recreate in low-elevation, easily accessible wilderness areas, but Congress must continue to work on legislation that protects our environment and supports outdoor recreation. It is our responsibility to preserve the beautiful lands that make our home such a great place to live for future generations.
