LGBT Equality Day

Dear Friend,

During a month when we celebrate the progress that LGBT Americans have made, the recent shooting in Orlando was a horrific attack on the freedoms we all hold dear. As a way to stand up to the hatred and intolerance we saw, I’m encouraging everyone join me in observing LGBT Equality Day this Sunday, June 26th.

I have introduced legislation to designate June 26th as LGBT Equality Day to commemorate the anniversary of three different landmark Supreme Court rulings that helped eliminate discrimination, affirm the dignity of LGBT families and move our country toward a more perfect union.

But even as same-sex couples enjoy the right to marry in all 50 states, the LGBT community continues to face hate, violence and discrimination simply for who they are and who they love.

That’s why LGBT Equality Day is not only a day to celebrate our progress, but also a day to acknowledge how much work remains to be done. Together we must keep fighting to break down barriers and ensure all Americans are safe and secure.

As always, my office is here to serve you. If you have questions or comments about the topics that matter most to you, I encourage you to contact me through my website.
