Dear Friend,
As a former high school athlete and football referee, I know sports are important to keeping our communities fit and healthy. So during March – which is also Brain Injury Awareness Month – I joined a roundtable discussion with athletes, doctors, researchers and coaches at VICIS, a local business that manufactures a football helmet designed to more effectively absorb impact forces (pictured right).
Each year, more than 3.5 million U.S. children and adults sustain a brain injury, and it’s incredibly important for us to take every possible safety precaution to protect our students and athletes.
That’s why I support the SAFE PLAY Act (H.R. 829). This bill takes a multi-pronged approach of research, community education and federal support to train educators and coaches in head injury response to keep student athletes safe. I am also a cosponsor of the Concussion Awareness and Education Act (H.R. 1271), which would establish a national system to accurately determine the incidence of sports-related concussions among youth.
We can and must start to address the troubling increase in injuries, like concussions. By working together through research and community education, and by ensuring the latest advances in technology and equipment are used, we can help keep our students and athletes safe.
