DelBene Statement on First Complaint Under USMCA Rapid Response Mechanism

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement in response to the first complaint filed under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) Rapid Response Labor Mechanism:

“The USMCA is a historic trade deal that brought the North American continent closer together and laid the foundation for a 21st century trade policy with workers’ rights as a focal point. The agreement was strengthened by House Democrats with transformative new labor protections and enforcement mechanisms with the goal of empowering workers, raising wages, and improving working conditions.

“The true test of this agreement is making sure we can enforce it. Today’s complaint filed by the AFL-CIO, SEIU, SNITIS, and Public Citizen against Tridonex demonstrates that workers can seek justice through this resource.

“I was deeply involved in House Democrats’ efforts that secured significant protections for workers in the USMCA agreement and welcome today’s complaint. A successful resolution in this case is essential to send a message to private employers and government officials that they cannot undermine their workforce or resist labor law reforms. I expect the Biden administration to use its authority to prioritize enforcing these hard-fought protections.
