A Long-term Solution to Childhood Poverty

Dear friend,

Last week, House Democrats finished marking up President Biden’s COVID-19 relief proposal, the American Rescue Plan, preparing it for a floor vote in our chamber next week and for final passage in Congress in March. The package creates a coordinated national strategy to defeat the virus and provides much-needed relief to American families and our economy during this difficult time.

Included in this bill is a one-year expansion of the Child Tax Credit, a measure I am championing to provide qualifying families with monthly payments of up to $250 per child and $300 for children under 6. While getting this relief to families during the current crisis is important, Congress should next make this benefit permanent to lift millions of children out of poverty.

The Seattle Times recently wrote about why the American Family Act, my proposal to make the Child Tax Credit expansion permanent, should be passed: “The American Family Act would do more than tweak dry tax policy. It would offer struggling families a lifeline…Congress should quickly usher important family relief into law.” You can read the full editorial here.

As always, I am here to help you. If you need assistance at this difficult time, please do not hesitate to contact my Kirkland office at (425) 485-0085. For more updates on what I’m doing for WA-01, you can follow me on social media at the links above.
