Protecting Your Personal Data

Dear friend,

In our digital world, we all want to know that our personal data is safe and secure. Yet, a stunning 70 percent of Americans believe that their personal data is less secure now than it was five years ago. While states like California and Virginia are adopting more rigorous privacy standards, these laws become increasingly confusing as you cross state boundaries. Sensitive health, location, and financial data, protected in one state, may not be protected in another.

We need one uniform national policy to protect our data from abuse no matter where we are. Earlier this week, I introduced legislation that would establish a federal consumer data privacy standard to put you back in control of your information. My proposal would:

  • Require companies to provide their privacy policies in "plain English,” so you don’t have to trudge through legal jargon to understand what you are agreeing to.
  • Allow you to “opt-in” before companies can use your most sensitive private information in ways you might not expect.
  • Increase transparency by requiring companies to disclose if and with whom your personal information will be shared.

Data privacy is an issue of civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights. Too often, we are asked to put blind faith in companies, not knowing how they will use our information and without a clear way to hold them accountable. As our digital world grows and evolves, we must keep up and prioritize protection. You can learn more about my bill here.
