DelBene Leads the Call for Enhanced Campaign Cybersecurity in Democracy Reform Bill

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protecting Our Democracy Act (H.R. 5314) that contains an amendment spearheaded by Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01). The Protecting Our Democracy Act is landmark democracy reform legislation that would help prevent presidential abuse of power and reinforce our Constitutional system of checks and balances. DelBene’s amendment would help enhance cybersecurity across political campaigns and protect personal data collected.

“Protecting our democracy also means improving how political campaigns safely store and protect the information they collect,” said DelBene. “These groups collect a significant amount of voter data, ranging from public to personal information. Americans should have the confidence that their data is protected from cybercriminals and foreign advisories and cannot be used to influence our elections or spread disinformation.”

The amendment that DelBene secured would direct the Federal Elections Committee (FEC) to provide guidance for campaigns on cybersecurity risks and best practices in consultation with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and other relevant agencies.
