How the U.S. is Standing with Ukraine
Washington, D.C.,
March 19, 2022
Dear friend, This week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Congress virtually as the tragic Russian war in Ukraine enters its fourth week. The images and reporting coming from this conflict are heartbreaking, and I am in awe of the strength and courage of the president and the Ukrainian people in the face of this senseless violence. The U.S. stands with Ukraine. I am thankful that President Biden has already taken action and continues to increase pressure on Putin to hold him accountable. Congress has stepped up as well. Last week, Congress approved $13.6 billion in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine. This week, the House passed legislation that will suspend permanent normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus to further isolate Putin from the world economy and ensure that the U.S. is not funding his war. The Biden administration is doing its part by imposing comprehensive sanctions on Russia, including cutting major Russian banks off from the SWIFT global payments communications system, implementing export controls to restrict Russia’s ability to procure critical technologies such as semiconductor chips and defense components, and enacting import bans on Russian oil and other goods. This week, President Biden announced an additional $800 million in military aid for Ukraine, including anti-air systems that will help protect Ukraine’s skies from Russian air attacks. As President Zelenskyy made clear in his address, there is still more that the U.S. and our allies can do to support the Ukrainian people as they fend off these brutal attacks that have already taken hundreds of civilian lives and displaced millions from their homes. I will continue working with my colleagues across the aisle and the Biden administration to deliver aid to Ukraine while making sure that Putin pays a devastating price for this war of choice.
