Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement on the election of a new Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Mike Johnson will not solve the problems facing Americans, he will only exacerbate them. After shutting down the House of Representatives for over three weeks, Republicans chose to elevate a key architect of the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, an ardent supporter of a national abortion ban, and someone who attacks the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans to one of the most consequential positions in our nation and second in line to the Presidency. Instead of joining Democrats in a bipartisan path forward – the only way anything can get done in Congress – they chose to cave to the most far-right in their party yet again.

“Democrats will continue to be the party of governing and will work to find common ground where we can but are also committed to standing up to the extremism that is dangerous to American families, our economy, and our democracy.”
