Redmond Unveils State’s First Electric Fire Truck With $1M Federal Investment DelBene Secured

On Saturday, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) joined community leaders to unveil Washington’s first-ever electric fire truck. The engine and charging infrastructure were made possible with a $1 million federal investment that DelBene secured. The funding will help purchase a second truck for Bellevue.

These new electric engines will replace older polluting diesel trucks and prevent 18 metrics tons of carbon emissions each year per engine. Transportation is the largest source of carbon pollution in Washington, contributing 22% of total air pollution and 39% of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Today, Washington continues to show it is at the forefront of a green economy. This flagship electric fire engine will make our communities safer and greener. It will also help other municipalities adopt this cutting-edge technology and put it to work in their communities. It was a pleasure to partner with the cities of Redmond and Bellevue to secure the federal funding necessary to make this vision a reality,” said DelBene.

“The unveiling of the first-ever electric fire truck in our state is not just a testament to our commitment to innovation — it’s a bold step forward in our dedication to sustainability, safety, and the well-being of our community,” said Redmond Mayor Angela Birney. “As we embrace the future, we are proud to lead the way in creating a safer, cleaner, and more resilient world for generations to come.”

DelBene secured over $18 million for 15 community projects across Washington’s 1st Congressional District in the FY24 federal funding package. Projects came directly from non-profit, city, county, Tribal, and state entities, and all funding secured was done in collaboration with project sponsors.
