REDMOND – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today held her first Veterans Advisory Board meeting to hear from local veterans about ways the federal government can better serve them.

“Too many veterans continue to face challenges like homelessness, unemployment and barriers to healthcare after they return from service. It’s our nation’s responsibility to serve and care for those who bravely risked their lives and made painful sacrifices for our families and freedoms,” DelBene said. “I look forward to bringing my Veterans Advisory Board’s thoughts and ideas back to the ‘other’ Washington so all our veterans receive the support and benefits they deserve and have earned.”

Last month, DelBene announced the formation of her Veterans Advisory Board composed of nine veteran leaders, who will meet quarterly to report feedback to her on issues important to their community. Washington state is home to more than 600,000 veterans, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

DelBene has introduced legislation to expand veterans’ access to long-term, good-paying jobs in the manufacturing industry, as well as legislation to expand the VA’s Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) veterans.
