Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) announced that three public transit systems in King, Snohomish, and Whatcom Counties will receive a combined $20 million for energy efficient bus lines. These systems include:

The award comes from two U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration grant programs funded through the bipartisan infrastructure law that DelBene supported. The Low or No Emission Program provides state and local governments with funding to purchase or lease zero-emission and low-emission transit buses. The Buses and Bus Facilities Program assists transit agencies with replacing, purchasing, and rehabilitating buses and associated facilities.

“These resources are a win for our environment and for Washingtonians who rely on our public transit systems to get to work and school, buy groceries, and visit their doctors,” said DelBene. “Thanks to the bipartisan infrastructure law that I helped pass, these critical investments are helping us achieve a safer, greener future.”

“Stride bus rapid transit will dramatically improve the daily commute for thousands of riders north, east and south of Lake Washington,” said Kenmore Council Member and Sound Transit Board Member David Baker. “The electric buses that this federal grant helps fund will provide a fast, reliable connection to light rail and offer a green alternative to sitting in traffic. I want to thank the Biden administration and our Congressional delegation for their partnership and support for this grant.”

“This much-needed funding fills a significant gap and could not have come at a better time,” said Michael Lilliquist, Chair of the Whatcom Transportation Authority Board of Directors. “It will help turn WTA’s long-term plans for cleaner, less-polluting buses into a reality. We’ve already invested in the charging infrastructure, and have a ready power source, trained drivers, and skilled mechanics to handle the new technology. This grant removes the last major hurdle for success. WTA is grateful for the strong and continuous support of Congresswoman DelBene, and excited about the difference these buses will make for Whatcom County.”

Earlier this week, Congresswoman DelBene announced that northwest Washington will receive $69 million from the bipartisan infrastructure law to fund three transportation projects in King, Snohomish, and Whatcom Counties through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Discretionary (RAISE) Grant program, which invests in critical road, rail, transit, and port projects across the country.
