DelBene Thanks Educators During Teacher Appreciation Week

The Congresswoman delivered school supplies, as well as Washington apples, to show educators her appreciation for their work.

KIRKLAND – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today visited John Muir Elementary to recognize two teachers for their hard work and important societal contributions during National Teacher Appreciation Week. DelBene delivered apples from Washington’s First District and school supplies to show her appreciation for the educators.

“In classrooms throughout the First District and across the country, teachers are doing incredible work to educate our kids and prepare them to succeed,” DelBene said. “We should all be incredibly grateful for their hard work and recognize the contributions they make every day for America’s students. I’m glad I could drop by John Muir Elementary today to show some teachers how much I appreciate all that they do.”

According to a National School Supply and Equipment Association study, 92 percent of teachers use their own money to purchase classroom supplies, spending on average $500 out of pocket. Last year, DelBene supported a tax relief package that included a permanent extension of the “teacher tax break” so educators can deduct up to $250 in school supplies from their tax bill. Congress passed that legislation at the end of 2015.

DelBene also helped introduce a House resolution (H.Res. 704) to encourage the recognition of National Teacher Appreciation Week and the role of teachers in building and enhancing America’s civic, cultural and economic well-being.
