U.S. Senators Grassley, Coons and U.S. Representatives Coble and DelBene Launch Historic Bipartisan, Bicameral Congressional Trademark Caucus
Washington, DC,
September 16, 2014
U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Chris Coons (D-DE), and U.S. Representatives Howard Coble (R-NC) and Suzan DelBene (D-WA) today announced the formation of the Congressional Trademark Caucus, the first Congressional Caucus dedicated solely to trademark issues and matters of importance to consumers. The bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Trademark Caucus will serve to educate Members of Congress and the public about the vital role trademarks and brands play in protecting the health and safety of consumers in the global marketplace. U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley: “With counterfeits on the rise in the U.S. and internationally, it’s important to raise awareness about trademarks and their impact on our economy. Consumers should know about the dangers of purchasing fake and potentially unsafe products. As Ranking Member on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and now as co-chair of the Congressional Trademark Caucus, I look forward to working with my colleagues on highlighting the importance of trademarks in our economy and the central role they play in the lives of consumers.” U.S. Senator Chris Coons: “The intellectual property that drives the U.S. economy has never been more valuable, or more vulnerable,” Senator Coons said. “Trademarks protect innovation, jobs, and consumer safety, and their infringement has serious consequences for American businesses and public health. As former in-house counsel to a materials-based manufacturing company, I am deeply aware of the threats America’s trademark holders face, and am committed to working with my colleagues to protect all forms of intellectual property. I’m proud to help launch the first Congressional Trademark Caucus and look forward to leading efforts to enhance awareness of and protection for American brands.” U.S. Representative Howard Coble (R-NC): “Trademarks are an important component of our economy. Having served on the House Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet throughout my career in Congress, I am pleased that my distinguished colleagues are joining me in launching the Congressional Trademark Caucus. We will use this inaugural year to recognize the work of trademark professionals and advocates who work day-in and day-out with government bodies around the world to provide safe purchasing environments for consumers.” U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene (D-WA): “It is an honor to join my fellow Senate and House Congressional Trademark Caucus co-chairs in providing leadership in Congress on important trademark issues. Trademarks play an important role in protecting consumers from counterfeit and otherwise unsafe products in the marketplace. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, I am eager to work with my colleagues, in partnership with consumer safety groups and trademark owners, to increase public awareness and help consumers learn more about how to safeguard themselves and their families against dangerous counterfeit products.” |
