DelBene Honors Burlington Victims in House Floor Speech

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today delivered remarks on the House floor to honor the victims of last week’s shooting at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Wash., that left five people dead:

“Mr. Speaker, I rise today with a very heavy heart. On Friday night, there was a tragic shooting at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, where five people died.

“The victims included a 16-year-old cancer survivor from Mount Vernon High School, a dedicated public servant from Arlington, her 95-year-old mother, a Boeing employee from Lake Stevens and a Macy’s cosmetic counter worker.

“As our community comes together during this difficult time, our region grieves for the victims, their families and all those affected by this tragedy.

“We will always remember Sarai Lara, Belinda Galde, Beatrice Dotson, Chuck Eagan and Shayla Martin. And I want to thank our local law enforcement for their long hours searching for the shooter, who was apprehended less than 24-hours after the incident.

“While there is no one law that will prevent every single instance of senseless violence, we must do more to end the tragic cycle of gun violence affecting our communities. I yield back.”
