DelBene Lauds SCOTUS Ruling on Women’s Right to Choose

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt.

“A woman’s access to reproductive healthcare shouldn’t be dependent on her income or zip code. Unfortunately, politicians across the country have been passing dangerous laws that block women from exercising their constitutionally protected right to choose,” DelBene said. “I’m glad the Court recognized that these shameful attacks undermine Roe v. Wade and put women’s health at risk. Women deserve better, and today’s ruling helps ensure they have the freedom to make their own healthcare choices — without interference from politicians.”

Earlier this year, DelBene joined more than 150 colleagues in filing an amicus brief urging the Court to support a woman’s constitutional right to decide whether and when to have a child.

In Whole Woman’s Health, Texas physicians challenged the state’s 2013 anti-choice law (HB 2), which threatened to close more than 75 percent of clinics offering abortion care and leave many women with little meaningful ability to exercise their constitutional rights. The Court ruled that HB 2 is unconstitutional, protecting women’s access to safe medical care.
