DelBene to Trump: Americans Need Certainty and Stability, Not Chaos

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today released the following statement after President Trump’s address to Congress:

“In order to create jobs and provide economic security, Americans need certainty and stability – something that has been severely lacking in the first few weeks of this presidency. I’m hearing a lot of fear and anxiety from constituents about some of the President’s recent actions. I share many of their concerns and want people to know I will continue to work to provide Americans with economic stability, keep our promise to seniors and fight to uphold our Constitution. While I still believe there is more that unites us as a county than divides us, the past year has exposed deep divisions.

“The new administration has been long on rhetoric and short on specifics. And this evening, the President highlighted an agenda which would move our country backwards, not forwards.

“Instead of stripping 30 million Americans of their insurance and creating a massive disruption to the entire healthcare system, we should be building a system that increases coverage and reduces costs. We cannot return to a time when people went bankrupt because they got sick or when insurance companies could deny coverage to the 120 million individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. Rather than focusing on commonsense reforms to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, like my bill to help more small businesses offer health insurance to employees, the President wants to eliminate vital, life-saving reforms with no viable plan for what comes next.

“We also desperately need comprehensive tax reform that provides economic stability and fairness for working families so they can plan for the future. But our current tax system is out of date with the way the world works today and doesn’t do enough to support the middle class.

“I will gladly work with Republicans on policies that provide economic stability and opportunity for the middle class and move our country forward. But I will not support efforts to roll back progress that we’ve made.”
