DelBene Statement on Prime Minister Modi Joint Meeting of Congress

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today released the following statement after the address of India Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a joint session of Congress:

“I agree with Prime Minister Modi that the success of the United States and India are linked, especially in areas such as climate change, technology and human rights.

“In order to protect our communities and the environment, we must address the challenge that climate change poses. Without a doubt, climate change is a serious threat to our way of life, our economy and our children – not to mention the future of our planet – and we will not be able to address the issue alone, which is why both India and the United States signing the Paris agreement was such an important step.

“Indian Americans have also contributed greatly to America’s technological prowess, including in Washington’s First District. Technology is now part of the world’s critical infrastructure, from computers and new devices to the Internet. And India has played a significant role in building the Internet revolution along with the United States.

“I look forward to continuing our strong relationship with India, and hope Prime Minister Modi’s visit will serve to further our countries’ mutual cooperation in a number of important areas, including human rights. Both the United States and India have important work left to ensure all our citizens – especially the most vulnerable – feel protected, are treated equally and have access to justice.”
