Following today’s reports that the National Security Agency (NSA) has conducted warrantless searches of the content of Americans’ e-mails and other private communications, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene issued the following statement: “The warrantless surveillance of American e-mails and phone calls is outrageous and represents nothing short of a constitutional violation. “For months, the NSA has repeatedly claimed that they have not crossed the line, that no civil liberties have been violated and that Americans should not be concerned. Time after time, these claims have repeatedly been proven wrong. “Enough is enough. Congress must pass legislation to rein in the NSA and prevent this type of warrantless surveillance. For too long, government surveillance has gone unchecked and Congress must move forward on legislation such as the USA Freedom Act to ensure we have oversight, transparency and accountability. “I will continue to work with my colleagues on the Judiciary Committee to move forward with meaningful reforms that protect our civil liberties.” |
