While I was in the district...

Dear Friend,

I’m committed to supporting our small businesses and local economies, and I will continue to work on policies that will help spur economic growth. Here’s a quick update on what I’ve done recently while in the district.

Last week, I had the opportunity to tour a number of our small and local businesses. Small and local businesses are the foundation for long-term economic growth and are the driving force behind our economy. One business, Kenmore Air, carries more than 100,000 passengers every year throughout the Pacific Northwest. This past week, they opened a new maintenance hangar in Kenmore to support their growing business. Greenwood Clean Energy, a small business founded in Redmond in 2009, is a leader in developing and distributing biomass-fueled appliances that provide clean, renewable heat. Finally, I had the opportunity to visit Hardware Sales in Ferndale. One of the Pacific Northwest’s leading hardware suppliers, the company relies on exports for 25 percent of its business.

I also met with Northern border stakeholders at Western Washington University’s Border Policy Research Institute to discuss cross-border commerce and its contribution to our local economy. The commerce and tourism that comes with sharing a border is a critical factor for a vibrant economy, and I am working to ensure that the movement of visitors and commerce across our Northern border is efficient and effective. Earlier this week, I introduced the Promoting Border Commerce and Travel Act to prevent the creation of a land border crossing fee to ensure that tourists can visit the U.S. without facing fees. Land border crossing fees for tourists would have an immediate and detrimental effect on the local economies of our border communities. My bill would stop these fees before they could be implemented.
