The Internet is the Highway of the 21st Century

Dear Friend,

In this Internet age, broadband plays a significant role in our ability to communicate, do business and educate our children. But too many communities, especially in remote or rural parts of the country, don’t have reliable access.

I recently heard from tribal leaders in the First District who told me about their struggles to get resources to improve broadband access. A report I requested shows government can and should be doing more to help our rural communities.

The Internet is the highway of the 21st century and Congress should be investing to ensure this major aspect of our nation’s infrastructure doesn’t languish just as some of our roads and bridges have.

As someone with a long career in the technology sector, I am concerned the United States will miss critical opportunities if we fail to meet the significant demand for broadband and wireless spectrum that our new economy demands.

By 2020, the Internet of Things (IoT) – Internet-enabled devices such as wristbands, cars, even thermostats – will encompass tens of billions of connected products, adding trillions of dollars to the economy and affecting nearly every aspect of modern life. That’s why I recently requested a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report so we can better understand the issues related to wireless spectrum and IoT.

In today’s economy, Congress needs to be engaged and educated on how to best help consumers access broadband and enable new technologies to thrive. I will continue working to ensure today’s lawmakers are forward-looking when it comes to technology.
