It's Time to Build a Green Economy

Dear Friend,

Without a doubt, climate change is a serious threat to our way of life, our economy, our children and the future of our planet. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), 2015 was the warmest year on record. Now, more than ever, is the time to act.

One way I’m fighting to combat the effects of climate change is through efforts to encourage innovation and growth in the clean energy economy. Last week, I helped introduce the 50x30 resolution, which calls for a strategy to reach a goal of more than 50 percent clean and carbon-free electricity by 2030. I was pleased to be joined by 130 of my colleagues in Congress.

I am also an original cosponsor of a bill that would prohibit any drilling along the continental shelf of the West Coast. It’s important to take steps now that will help foster the green economy while ensuring our children will be able to experience the same quality of life we enjoy today.

Climate change impacts our local economy, our nation’s health, the environment and our national security. To avoid the worsening effects of climate change, Congress must act. I will continue to advocate and be a leader in Congress to ensure our nation takes meaningful steps to build a new economy based on clean and renewable energy sources and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil.
