Jobs and the Economy
Dear Friend, Yesterday, Congress failed to reauthorize the U.S. Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank before its charter expired. The Bank serves as the export credit agency of the federal government, providing financial assistance both to U.S. businesses and foreign buyers, all while reducing the deficit. Just last year, Ex-Im supported more than 3,800 business and 160,000 American jobs while generating a $675 million surplus for taxpayers. In Congress, I have continuously emphasized the importance of reauthorizing Ex-Im for Washington state’s economy. It is inexcusable that House leadership did not even allow a vote on reauthorization, ignoring thousands of American businesses and workers, while leaving them at a competitive disadvantage on the global stage. As you know, Washington state exports some of the world’s best products, including airplanes, software, wine, dairy and produce. Since 2007, 33 businesses in Washington’s First District have received support from Ex-Im, with a total export value of $297 million. Ex-Im helps connect our local businesses with consumers around the world. When I visited Ted Mischaikov, the owner of Healthy Pet in Ferndale, he told me that 75 percent of his business’ growth is in international exports. Having the support of Ex-Im has helped Healthy Pet grow and keep jobs here at home. That’s why I have cosponsored legislation that would extend the Bank’s authority through 2021. I am committed to fighting for our small businesses, and I will continue working to get Ex-Im reauthorized as soon as possible. As always, my office is here to serve you.
