8/5/15A quick update
Washington, DC,
August 5, 2015
Dear Friend, This summer, I had the opportunity to visit Darrington. Mayor Dan Rankin and Steve Kuennen from the U.S. Forest Service took me on a tour of the beautiful Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest to talk about this year’s fire season. I was also able to enjoy a sunny afternoon at the annual Timberbowl Rodeo. It was great to be back among this community - and to see the progress that’s been made since the tragic landslide. Darrington and the surrounding Snohomish County areas continue to move forward in the wake of the SR 530 landslide that occurred in March of last year. This tragedy weighed heavy on our state, and the ensuing recovery process continues to be a top priority. More than a year has passed, and the people of Darrington continue working together to support the community, demonstrating their strength through adversity. I am also pleased that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced millions of dollars in grants to help the area. These recovery grants from FEMA demonstrate a commitment towards helping Washington communities. I will continue to push for the resources to help the region recover and for further research into how we can prevent and mitigate future tragedies. As always, my office is here to serve you.
