A quick update

Dear Friend,

It’s hard to believe that we’re already into the second month of the 114th Congress. Encouraging economic recovery and job creation are top priorities for me, which is why I’ve introduced two commonsense bills – the Manufacturing Jobs for Veterans Act (H.R. 344) and the Small Business Tax Credit Accessibility Act (H.R. 762).

Supporting Education and Job-Training for Veterans
In January, I was pleased to introduce the Manufacturing Jobs for Veterans Act. One of my top priorities in Congress is to support job growth and expand the middle-class. This bill will help connect employers with a pipeline of skilled, capable workers: veterans and service members re-entering the workforce.

Despite our nation’s recent economic growth, there are currently more than 500,000 unemployed veterans nationwide. Their talents and specialized training are an untapped resource for our manufacturing industry, which has as many as 600,000 unfilled jobs. The Manufacturing Jobs for Veterans Act would accelerate skills training for U.S. veterans in manufacturing career pathways, ensure veterans have the tools needed to translate their military skills to the civilian workforce, and encourage manufacturers to recruit, hire, and train our nation’s returning heroes.

It’s our duty to care for those who risked their lives to protect our families and freedoms, and I will continue working to ensure our veterans find good-paying, long-term employment.

Expanding Tax Credits for Small Businesses
The Affordable Care Act created a tax credit to help small businesses afford health coverage for their workers, but too many businesses are either ineligible for the credit or discouraged to take advantage of it because of the complexity. That is why this week, I introduced the Small Business Tax Credit Accessibility Act, which would expand and simplify this portion of the law so that more small businesses can qualify for the credit and provide affordable, quality health insurance to their workers.

I believe the ACA has made a number of important and needed changes to our healthcare system, which is why I was disappointed that House Leaders again forced a vote on repeal of the healthcare law – something they’ve done 56 times. Instead of taking yet another pointless vote to repeal the law, we should consider responsible, meaningful reforms, like this legislation, to improve the ACA and ensure it’s working for Washington’s businesses and families.
