Preventing Gun Violence

I sat down with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students, who were visiting the Capitol to ask lawmakers for action.
Now, not after the next tragedy, is the time for Congress to act to protect our communities from this senseless cycle of gun violence. This week, I helped introduce the Recognizing Gun Violence as a Public Health Epidemic Act, which would end the ban on federally funded research into gun violence. I’ve also cosponsored legislation that would strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to improve background checks on prospective gun buyers.

While I personally believe assault weapons have no place on our streets and support an assault weapons ban, in this Congress we can’t even agree to lift a ban on federally funded gun violence research. As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to protect our communities. And while there is no one law that will prevent every single instance of violence, we can and must do more to end this epidemic. I’m calling on Speaker Ryan and House leadership to allow us to vote at least on the ideas with bipartisan support, such as background checks on all gun sales and banning bump stocks.
