Growing Washington's Space Industry
Washington, D.C.,
October 25, 2018
Dear Friend, Washington state boasts a diverse range of innovative sectors, including an exciting local space industry. Our space industry supports more than 6,000 jobs and generates $1.7 billion for our economy. To sustain economic growth in our region, we must have an open dialogue between policymakers and industry leaders to understand the challenges and opportunities ahead and how we can best prepare for those. That’s why I joined House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), whose district includes NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, for a roundtable discussion hosted by Aerojet Rocketdyne along with other companies leading Washington state’s space industry. The dialogue focused on how to continue developing our space expertise and Congress’s role in supporting new innovations to benefit all Americans. The discussion was part of Rep. Hoyer’s “Make It in America” initiative, which aims to produce favorable conditions for U.S. businesses and expand economic opportunity for American workers. Retaining a competitive workforce, supporting STEM research, and enhancing the workforce pipeline are critical to producing a robust economy. Learning from space companies about their challenges and which strategies can help foster success was an invaluable experience. I remain committed to supporting policies that encourage entrepreneurship and advancement in this new and growing sector. As always, my office is here to serve you.
