Hard at Work!

Washington, D.C., September 12, 2019

Dear Friend,

This week was Congress’ first week back in session after the August District Work Period, and my colleagues and I are already hard at work representing your interests in the ‘other Washington.’

On Wednesday and Thursday, House Democrats passed three bills to better protect our precious environment and natural resources: The Protecting and Securing Florida’s Coastline Act of 2019, the Coastal and Marine Economies Protection Act, and the Arctic cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act. If passed into law these bills would block new offshore drilling along our coastlines, block new offshore drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, and repeal a damaging provision hidden in the GOP tax bill that opened the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas development.

The House Judiciary Committee also approved three bills that would prevent gun violence by banning high capacity magazines, encouraging states to establish extreme risk protection orders to prevent individuals in crisis from accessing firearms, and preventing individuals convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes from possessing firearms. I am looking forward to these bills coming to the House floor for a vote. Gun violence has plagued our country for far too long, and it is time we started passing bills in both the House and the Senate to address this crisis.
