Republicans More Focused on Supreme Court Power Play Than COVID-19 Relief
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement after press reports that President Trump will nominate Appeals Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve as the next Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:
“The Supreme Court is one of the most consequential institutions in our democracy and its decisions steer the direction of our nation for generations. In recent years, the Supreme Court has ruled on women’s reproductive rights and health care, the ability of corporations to pollute our environment, marriage equality, immigration laws, and voting rights.
“In a few weeks, the justices will consider the fate of the Affordable Care Act, which protects millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions and provides access to quality, affordable health coverage.
“President Trump and Senate Republicans’ inaction for the past four months on passing another COVID-19 relief bill shows their true priorities. Instead of coming to the table to reach another bipartisan deal to provide relief to workers, families, and small businesses, they intend to rush through a nominee for a lifetime appointment with just 39 days until a presidential election and as votes are already being cast.
“This is nothing less than a pure power play. Meeting the needs and listening to the voices of the American people should always be our first priority.”
